IMAP

IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol is a standard protocol for accessing email from your mail server. Emails are received and held for you by your mail server. You can view just the heading and the sender of the email and then decide whether to download the mail to your computer.

The protocol can use a lot of disk space to store the email messages.
